Floor area does not define the ventilation duty

Comfort loads may be estimated from people, envelope, lighting and ordinary equipment. Process ventilation depends on what is released, where it is released, at what rate, under which operating mode and what consequence follows if extraction stops. Treating both duties as one room air-change figure hides the source and weakens control.

Build a process-release schedule

Each process should be mapped by operating state, sensible and latent heat, gas, vapour, dust or aerosol release, required capture method, make-up air, discharge constraint and emergency condition. Supplier data should be checked against actual production rate and simultaneous operation.

Capture at source before diluting the room

Local capture normally reduces the volume that must be treated and limits contaminant migration. Hood geometry, enclosure, process motion, cross-draughts and operator access determine capture performance. The make-up air route must support the capture field rather than disrupt it.

Coordinate safety and hygiene boundaries

Recirculation, heat recovery and common ductwork may create cross-contamination or fire paths. Their suitability must be assessed against the material, process, fire strategy, cleaning regime and local requirements. Food and beverage facilities also require clear zoning, condensation control and maintainable hygienic access.

Define failure response and verification

Controls should state what happens on fan failure, filter blockage, production stop, fire alarm, loss of make-up air and unsafe gas or pressure condition. Commissioning must measure the parameter that proves performance: capture, pressure, contaminant concentration, temperature, airflow or another project-specific criterion.

Acceptance criterion

The industrial ventilation strategy is ready for detailed design when every material process release has a defined capture or dilution route, balanced make-up air, discharge path, safety response, operating mode and measurable commissioning criterion.
