Smoke-control performance is governed by the fire scenario, building use, occupancy, geometry and escape strategy. Extract volume alone does not establish a working system. Smoke must reach the reservoir or extract point, replacement air must enter without disrupting the layer, shafts must fit, discharge must be safe and the system must operate under fire conditions.
If the ceiling zone, façade, cores and escape routes are fixed first, the remaining solution may require larger shafts, deeper reservoirs, reduced ceiling heights or mechanical duties that are difficult to coordinate and verify.
Establish the design objective and scenario
The team must state whether the system supports means of escape, firefighting access, property protection or another objective. The adopted fire size, location, door condition, sprinkler status, smoke-layer height, environmental condition and duration must align with the fire strategy and local legal basis.
Coordinate replacement air as part of the system
Replacement air is not a residual architectural opening. Its quantity, velocity, distribution and interaction with escape routes affect the smoke layer and door operation. High-velocity air can cause mixing or prevent doors from being opened safely. The path must therefore be calculated and shown, not described only in a note.
Protect shafts, reservoirs and access
Internal clear shaft area must account for construction tolerances, fire rating, supports, access and pressure loss. Reservoirs need a defined boundary and depth. Fans, dampers, controls and power supplies require inspection, testing and replacement access throughout the building life.
